Stopping Programs That Run at Startup - This Will Improve Your Computer's Speed

Stopping programs that run at start-up can help to improve a computers speed. There are two affects that this has on a running computer, firstly it will improve the computers start-up time as less software has to start up when loading into Windows. The second is that because a lot of software will not be loaded, and only opened when actually needed by the user, there will be less processes loaded into RAM (random access memory) meaning the computer as a whole will perform much better.

To see exactly which programs are loading at start-up and to stop unwanted programs from loading, you must use a feature called msconfig. This is a program which lists all services and programs that run at start-up, it allows you to see what the name of the program is as well as the file that is actually running. It comes built in in all Windows operating systems and is accessible from the start menu or using the run command.

To open msconfig, simply go to the start menu and in the search box type "msconfig". This will open up the interface, there will be a number of tabs and one will say start-up, select that tab and on the page will be a list of programs, each one will have a tick or an empty box next to it, with a tick and it will load at start-up, if there is no tick then it will not, simply look at each program and decide whether you want it to load at Windows start-up or not. If you are unsure about which programs to stop and which to have running, a basic rule would be to make sure an antivirus and firewall is ticked. If you are unsure about any other programs, search the listed name on Google to see if it is important or not and what its function is, from there you can make a decision whether it is essential to you or not. You cannot hurt Windows by anticking everything, but as mentioned above, just ensure you don't compromise security by stopping an antivirus or firewall from loading.

That is all there is to it, It is a pretty simple procedure, however if you get stuck or are unsure about what to press then go online and find an illustrated guide, this will guide you through the process with pictures and will be much easier to follow.

By following the instructions and stopping programs from loading you will speed up you PC and improve its performance.
