Weighing Up The Options Of EReaders

Ebook readers are the modern substitute for real books and can be found in more and more homes as they grow in popularity. In this article we take a look at some of your options when selecting a digital reader for yourself or as a gift for someone that you care about.

Screen Size

Your eyes will be focused on the screen so you should get a digital reader with an adequate sized screen and adjustable resolution. If you want something that's more portable, a reader with a 5.7 screen will best suit that purpose. For the elderly or those who have eyesight problems you can get a reader with a 9.7 screen. Naturally, you shouldn't expect as much portability with bigger screens. But if you prefer text over portability, get a bigger screen by all means.

Display Type

A digital reader also comes in two display types, LCD and e-ink. The LCD display doesn't need external light under low light conditions because it already has backlighting and color display. Meanwhile, the e-Ink display helps to reduce eyestrain and makes reading easy. If you choose an ebook reader with an LCD display, you have to check how far you can adjust the brightness and contrast. The e-Ink display will be nicer to your battery but you may have to purchase external lighting if you read in low light conditions. E-Ink displays are limited to grayscale but color e-Ink displays are on their way soon.

The Details

The small details matter with your digital reader. If you have the opportunity to test the product, do so by all means. Adjust the font type and font size while you're reading. Is the wireless connection consistent? Would you like an ebook reader with Wi-Fi connectivity? Not all readers have this feature. Standard readers have at least one USB port. There are readers that have web browsers, but like the Wi-Fi feature, not all readers have web browsers.

Formats

What about the formats? What formats can the reader support? For example, the portable document format (.pdf) is almost a universal format but not all readers can support the comic book archive file. If you are going to use your ebook reader to read your Archie Comics collection, you have find a reader that can support images.

Battery Life

Don't forget to be particular about the battery life. As said earlier, the battery life of an eReader with an e-Ink display is longer than with an LCD display. Wi-Fi, touchscreen, games, and MP3 are features that drastically reduce the battery life of a reader. If you're the type who's always out and about and you can't compromise the battery life, you can disable those features so you can use your digital reader for a long time.

Lots more information and details are available at the eReader site, you can even find the amazing Kindle and various other models of ebook readers.
