What used server hardware is worth money, and what is junk? How do I find a company to help us remove our old servers and refresh our data center? If we can't recover any money for our old equipment, can we recycle it and in an eco-friendly manner? How can we be assured that any confidential company information will be securely removed from our servers?
If you have ever struggled with any of these questions, you are not alone. An 800 number with answers for these types of questions does not exist. Who can you trust to help you?
I am willing to bet that you have no idea just how many companies out there specialize in this type of removal and asset disposition. There are hundreds if not thousands of them ranging in size from a few folks carrying tools to an entire fleet of engineers.
Before you even attempt to contact anyone for help in this arena, do yourself a favor. Like the Boy Scouts of America preach, be prepared. You can greatly help cut down your search time by preparing an audit of the equipment that you currently have in place. Be sure to have serial numbers and configurations of your machines listed if possible. It will help determine if there is any market value/demand remaining for that equipment. Why is this important?
In many cases you may be able to recoup some of your initial costs, but prepare to be insulted by low offers. The numbers will be marginal compared to what you initially paid for the equipment. Just like driving a new car off the lot and experiencing simultaneous loss of value, such is the case when you first remove your servers from their packaging.
The rapid changes within the tech sector mean that a system bought today, may be out of date before it even hit the distributors shelf let alone shipped to your site. Though there is demand for some older parts and machines, overall, your machines will depreciate. It is not a matter of "if" they will lose, rather it is a matter of "how quickly" they will lose value.
You can call up an authorized distributor or reseller for more information, find a broker to assist you, or ask your fellow data center managers for their recommendation on a company who can assist you through this transition. There are companies out there who can help; you just have to know where to look to find them.
We specialize in partnering with companies looking for services just like this. We are always buying used equipment and focus in Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. Call us with questions, we would love to help make this transition an easy one for you.
