Some UK-based tablet accessory providers and iPad case retailers, began promoting their first ever Black Friday deals last week, getting involved with the kick-off to the Christmas shopping period.
This weekend, the likes of Walmart saw point-of-sale displays broken and fittings destroyed, as many shoppers clamored for the in-store deals used to generate the most in-store custom and foot fall.
To many shoppers, this is a stressful experience, and so more and more shoppers seek to avoid the rush by shopping online. Ecommerce sales have steadily increased year on year, with 2010 seeing a 9% overall growth in online trade compared to the previous year on Black Friday; a level of growth which remained true all weekend, including the more recent 'Cyber Monday'.
As these retailers expand and roll out their business models internationally, participating in the local festivities has become important in gaining brand visibility. So to get involved some iPad 2 Case retailers have been giving away free iPhone 4 /4S cases with every purchase made on their sites whilst others have been granting large price reductions from Black Friday through to midnight on Cyber Monday.
These retailers need to bear in mind the mindset of the consumer when making marketing decisions during this period, those who are shopping online over the Black Friday weekend are not necessarily in the market for anything in particular, they are just looking for a good deal; so this presents retailers with an opportunity to present themselves to new audiences who may not have thought to buy cases for iPads and tablet devices in the first instance. As such they stand to gain a lot of extra exposure and potentially increased sales revenues as a result.
TechCrunch recently posted an article stating that early estimates place this year's Black Friday Ecommerce sales growth at 25% which is much higher than many expected, although this may better reflect emerging trends, where people shop more from home to avoid the crush.
Many anticipated that online retailing would continue to grow as the Internet become more accessible, and tablet and mobile devices have played a large part in that. This year, Amazon was once again crowned the 'most visited' store on Black Friday and for those iPad 2 Case retailers who are a part of the Amazon Marketplace, their sales channels reflect this. As an online retailer it is important to appear in all the right places and to be seen by millions on Amazon is a good start.
There are a number of other websites set up specifically for deals that are valid on Black Friday through to Cyber Monday and these are also great places to gain visibility. For those retailers that want to operate a Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal, it is important that these business owners focus on getting media coverage in as many places as possible.
Despite the recession and polls demonstrating that 37% of Americans felt that they are financially worse off now, than they were at the same time last year, recent figures indicate an overall increase in Black Friday trade for this year. Where Black Friday sales figures are used to gauge the spending behaviour of consumers, this year looks to be a good year for online retailers all round.
