The Leica Disto D210XT Laser Measuring Device - An Objective Review

The Leica Disto D210XT laser measuring device is small, light-weight, robust and built to operate in abusive environments. It is jet-water proof, completely protected against dust and can withstand 6-foot drop tests. The Leica corporation must have had construction workers in mind as an important target group when designing this laser distance meter.

Being the smallest laser measuring device in the world it can fit into pockets easily. It has a soft grip design and feels comfortable to hold.

Distances and areas can be added or subtracted with the push of a button. This capability comes in handy in situations when the area of a room goes around a corner or when the total area of several rooms needs to be calculated. The flip-out end piece makes measurements from edges and corners straight forward. It is easy to define the diagonal of a room. The maximum area function is useful for finding the longest distance. The stake out function is used to stake out equal distances.

The Disto D210XT lets you assign shortcut keys for entire functions. This saves effort and time. Distances can be measured and areas or volumes can be calculated with a few keystrokes. Two or three measurements, for example, are enough for the Leica Disto D210XT laser measuring device to calculate wall and ceiling areas as well as volumes with precision.

Another useful feature of the Leica Disto D210XT laser measuring device is that it gives off an audible signal as soon as a preset distance or a multiple of one has been reached.

Single or multiple results display at the same time due to its three-line display screen. The back-light of the liquid crystal display (LCD) allows measurements to be made in darkness.

There are several customer reviews online for the Leica Disto D210XT laser measuring device which indicates commercial activity around this product. About 80 percent of the reviews are 5-star and the rest of them 4-star which is another good indication. Overall, users are mostly happy with the ease at which this laser measuring device can perform measurements. One user likes the fact that he or she does not have to pause and write down measurements because the Leica Disto D210XT stores the last 10 measurements in fast memory. One negative thing was pointed out and this was the fact that the Leica Disto D210XT laser measuring device does not have a tripod mount for stable measurements.

An Introduction To The Leica Disto D8 Laser Measuring Device

The Leica Disto D8 laser measuring device combines incredibly precise distance and tilt measurements with Bluetooth data transfer. The integrated Bluetooth technology allows measurements to be transferred wirelessly and reliably to desktop computers, pocket PCs and tablets. Once there, it is easy to process the data using Excel, Word, AutoCAD and other data processing software. So paper and pencil in distance measurements is now a thing of the past.

Using the Disto D8 is easy. To make a straight line distance measurement, the Disto D8 is turned on by pushing the On/Dist button. Then, the unit can be placed on the floor or against a wall. Once the red dot is visually located on the ceiling or the opposite wall, the Dist button can be pressed once again to take the measurement. It appears as a number at the bottom of the screen.

The 2.4-inch LCD screen is high-resolution and presents measurement results and supplementary information in a clear format.

To erase a measurement, the Clear button at the bottom center of the keypad can be pressed. To take another measurement, the On/Dist button can be pressed twice. The screen displays up to 4 sequential measurements.

The digital point finder with zoom capability, makes it finding the target much easier for long distances and even allows distance measurements to be done under direct sunlight.

Because the Leica Disto D8 laser measuring device has a built-in 360 degree tilt sensor, all angles can be determined easily. The combination of angle and linear measurements makes it possible to determine inconvenient distances where conventional methods simply do not work.

With the Leica Disto D8 even a simple altitude cross section can be determined. First, a known reference mark is first measured. Then measurements are made from each of the relevant altitude differences. It is then possible to determine a tread with the horizontal and vertical difference measurements as long as they have been recorded in one direction.

Reviews by Amazon customers are mostly 5-star reviews. Many come from experienced Leica users who upgraded to the Disto D8. All of them reported that the D8 is better than the D2 and D5 in all respects. The accuracy of this device is often described as "unbelievable". Other positive comments are about the ease of the Bluetooth connectivity, the durability of the device and the high resolution of its camera that makes it easy to locate distant targets.

One criticism found was about the Bluetooth software included in the package not being compatible with 64-bit Windows systems and that this limitation was is not explained properly in the manual. Out of all laser measuring devices, the Leica Disto D8 is the most versatile for indoor and outdoor measurement jobs and not in the least due to the big number of advanced measuring functions that it packs.
