HDMI Cable - Getting Started

If you are looking to get the most out of your home entertainment system or computer then there is no substitute for an HDMI cable. HDMI stands for Hi Definition Multimedia Interface and has quickly become the standard in the industry. Whether you are upgrading your existing system or installing new components and dealing with HDMI for the first time, there are a few things to keep in mind so that you get the best quality product without having to spend a fortune in the process. Choosing the right cable for your system is not difficult, but there are a few things you should be aware of.

The most important thing for you to understand is that there is not a huge difference between an expensive HDMI cable and a cheaper one. In fact, many of the manufacturers of the premium cables also manufacture the generic cables, making them essentially the same except for the price. Although there may be some instances where it pays to purchase a premium cable, most consumers will be just fine purchasing a less expensive product as long as they keep in mind a couple of important things.

When purchasing your HDMI cables, it is crucial that you choose one that is the proper length. While choosing a cable that is too short is obviously going to lead to a frustrating experience, purchasing one that is too long will mean that you spend 2 to 3 times as much unnecessarily. Measure the distance between the two HDMI ports that you intend to connect and add one to 2 feet to account for any additional link that may be necessary. If you are going to be running a cable over a long distance or outside, you may want to consider purchasing one that has extra insulation in order to prevent any unwanted signal interference.

The other thing that you should understand about an HDMI cable is that not all of them provide the same high definition experience. For example, if you have a new monitor or television that is capable of full 1080 HD, you will want to purchase a cable that will provide you with the highest resolution possible. If, in an effort to save money or because you did not pay attention, you purchase a cable that is only capable of 720p, you will miss out on the full high definition experience that your components are capable of delivering.
